New Orleans Record Store Day Rundown: 4/22/2017

Record Store Day happens on Saturday April 22nd, which means that record stores around new orleans will have sales, events and will carry limited edition items from the Record Store Day company (henceforth refered to as RSD). There are a few RSD items of particular interest to New Orleanians this year, most notably an Allen Toussaint collection and a Meters box set.

Record Store Day continues to be controversial, but the record stores themselves seem to agree: it's very helpful. Even if you're not interested in the official Record Store Day merchandise, it's nice to drop into these stores and be a part of it, especially when a lot of them are doing their best to make the day fun in other ways. If you ARE interested in some of the official record store day items, you can find a list on the Record Store Day website.

Love it or hate it, Record Store Day is significant. Thankfully, there's more to it than pricey limited edition reissues: the record stores themselves have their own twist on it. I'll be making a marathon trip of all the New Orleans area record stores, whether they stock RSD items or not. For a full list of record store day releases, check out the Record Store Day website

RSD: One Man's Journey to as many Record Stores as possible

I love the idea of a Record Store Day but there really weren't many items in the Record Store Day roster that excited me. So I like to take the opportunity to check on my record store friends and see how the madness is going for them. But if this is really a special day, then I should do it in a special way. So I set out to do the Record Store GRAND TOUR: hit all New Orleans record stores in one day.

New Orleans Black Friday/Record Store Day Stuff 2012

Record Store Day has expanded onto the awful worldwide phenomenon of Black Friday. That means special one-day-only releases at record stores nationwide. While personally, I'm not a huge fan of the event (I much prefer my music used, affordable, and not bought explicitly for later ebay selling), it is a big day for the local stores.

Most record stores don't know what they're getting from Record Store Day, nor how much (and often they end up just crossing their fingers that they'll get them on time).
